Background
Dr. Shull grew up in a small town in Ohio. He has always had a love of working with animals but was limited to helping friends with their animals. When he graduated high school and had to decide on a career, veterinary medicine seemed like too much school. He tried to think of something else to pursue but everything led him back to becoming a veterinarian.

Education
Dr. Shull attended veterinary school at The Ohio State University. He has an undergraduate degree in Animal Science as well as his Doctor Of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State. After graduation he did a year long internship at Pioneer Equine Hospital in Oakdale California. At the end of his internship he took a job at Sweet River Equine in Modesto California where he worked for about 1 1/2 years. His dad had passed away and he decided he wanted to move closer to family and he moved back to Ohio. He only stayed for about 3 months, however, before he moved west again. He moved to Montrose where he worked at San Juan Veterinary Clinic for about 1 1/2 years before starting Western Slope Equine Hospital. He practiced strictly equine medicine and surgery for about 10 years before expanding his services to small animals. That is when the name of the clinic changed to Western Slope Animal Hospital. Dr. Shull’s wife, Stephanie, is his partner in the practice and helped to get it started. She also answered the phone for many years until their 3 children started taking up most of her time. Dr. Shull’s children JR, Cooper, and Riley also help out from time to time and mean everything to him.

I grew up in the small town of Craig, CO and spent all of my summers in the Montrose, CO area helping my grandparents on the family ranch. This in part brought my interests of veterinary medicine which was the beginning of the journey to what brought me here today. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree of Animal Science at CSU in 2019 which was followed by moving into the CSU DVM program as a 2024 graduate. One of my goals with becoming a veterinarian was to return to rural Colorado to serve the ranching communities who helped make me who I am today. I’m excited to continue my career through serving in mixed animal practice.

Outside of work my dog Banjo and I enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, and spending time with family.

Growing up on the front range of Colorado, we always had pets. This continued into adult life, with a particular soft spot for the ones with special needs. Caring for animals is what drives us, so what would be better than helping care for all the furbabies we can. In my off time I enjoy rock hunting, star gazing, and hanging out with the dogs, cats and birds at home.

I was born in Montrose and grew up all over the United States, from the very bottom of Arizona to the very top of Montana. I returned to Montrose when I was 21 where I met my true love Dale, we have been happily married for 33 years. We have one son Zane who is employed in the aerospace industry as a Computer Engineer in Colorado. I was born horse crazy and have had horses in my life since I was born. From my first pony at four years old to my Andalusian and Lusitano that own my heart now, in addition to my horses I am owned by two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Border Collie and two silly barn cats. Animals have always been an important part of my life, so that makes my job a Western Slope Animal Hospital a dream come true.
